parigha = an iron bar or beam used for locking or shutting a gate
Not the flashiest of yoga asana but an amazing one for stretching the side body and increasing breath capacity to access deeper breathing. I’ve found practicing Gate Pose (also known as Parighasana) in pregnancy so beneficial and it’s also ideal for beginners. We even added a Gate Pose sequence to Sunday’s Foundations of Yoga class this weekend, as I’m really loving this pose at the moment!
‘Parighasana (Gate Pose) energizes and lightens the side body. In Sanskrit parigha means “the bar used for shutting a gate.” In Parighasana the body resembles that cross beam.
One definition for “gate” is “any means of access or entrance.” Practicing Gate Pose grants us access to improved breathing and a greater movement of prana, the universal life-force energy, throughout the body’.
